'Japanese tradition believes that trees are inhabited by spirits (kodama). This knowledge is passed down by the elderly over successive generations and doing so the trees that have Kodama living in them are protected.

“In Japan, our grandparents told tales of Kodoma, spirits who inhabit the deep forest, who come to our rescue should we got lost in those dark woods – but only if we respect nature, only if we accept our human responsibilities...

So I reach for Kodama to guide me through the darkness. And ask other Ikebana* artists across the world to create their vision of Kodoma with me. I share the traditional Japanese belief that spirits are everywhere, especially in nature. For me the truth of our universe can be found in wilderness. And my hope is our Kodoma Project can bring light to people’s heavy heart”
